Description:
Here are pages two and three of a 14-page pamphlet entitled "Altoona Shops Inspection Trip: Sunday, May 16 [1937]." It was published in advance of the Trip by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Page 2, Top Photo Caption: "'The Pioneer' in use 1851-1880. A wood burner, but could attain a speed of 70 miles per hour." Page 2, Bottom Photo Caption: "The GG1 of 1937 ~ a Pennsylvania Railroad giant." Shown here is PRR engine #4843, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built in Juniata during May of 1935 and rated at 4,620 horsepower. On page three is a "Foreword" by the PRR's 11th President, Mr. Martin Washington Clement, who occupied that office from 1935 through 1948.

WIL-ALT-65. Here is an original photo that I took during a trip on Pennsylvania Railroad passenger trains from Wilmington to Altoona during August of 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #4843 and #4852. Both are GG-1's built in Juniata during 1935; #4843 was built in May, but #4852 was built in June. They are pulling an eastbound coal train past the Harrisburg Passenger Station.
