The car's original number was not 251 but instead possibly 290, 316 or 340. For the 50th Anniversary of Ore celebration the car was restored and renumbered #251 to represent the first ore car delivered to the Duluth & Iron Range. The cars in the series were 28 foot wooden structures but later rebuilt to 24 foot to better fit the dock pockets. Each could haul a maximum of 20 tons of ore boulders. From 1900 on, only steel ore cars were ordered and the last wooden ore car was phased out in 1909. |
