Magna Carta. Here is the second of two original successive photos that I took of the "Magna Carta Special" at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 June 1961. Prominent here is Mr. Morton J. Smith, a regional vice president of the PRR. Speaking from the open platform of his business car, the "Pittsburgh," he's advocating for: (1) equal regulation parity between railroads and other transportation modes; (2) the right of railroads to diversify into other types of business; and (3), an end to de facto governmental subsidies for other means of transportation (e.g., free interstate highways and airports built with public monies). |
