To forestall any delays to Amtrak, as well as keep its own traffic moving, CR stationed a unit outside the tunnel for just such an occasion. Hopefully, he didnt get too much work. We see the E 44 assigned for todays task at Penn Station. |

Both are E44 (C-C) electrics built by General Electric for the Pennsylvania Railroad and rated at 4,400 horsepower each. #4456 was constructed in March of 1963. The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Electric Railroading ~ Penn Central and Pennsylvania Lines" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (868-15). |
