SP 2-8-8-2 #4000 - Southern Pacific
Title:  SP 2-8-8-2 #4000 - Southern Pacific
Description:  This loco is listed in the RRPA database as a 2-8-8-0 since the option of 2-8-8-2 was not available. Built by Baldwin in April of 1909 as a traditional cab in rear 2-8-8-2 (serial #33340), the articulated loco had severe problems with poisonous gases, noise and heat problems while running through 40 miles of tunnels and snow sheds. The problems led SP to develop the unique, redesigned cab forward 2-8-8-2 models. Only two conventional 2-8-8-2's were built by Baldwin for the SP (#4000 & 4001)and they were eventually rebuilt in June of 1923 as cab forward locos (MC-2 class). In 1931, the loco was rebuilt to a simple class AC-1 at the Sacramento Shops. Finally in April of 1948 it was scrapped. Original specs - cab in rear, class MC-1, 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26 & 40x30" cylinders, engine weight of 425,000 lb and tractive effort of 94,880 lb. Unknown photographer and only the year was given for the photo.
