Album Info:During the Cold War time, Sweden’s Army put in the 1950ties steam engines into hidden sheds all over the country as a strategic reserve. Several Swedish Rail Museums organized in June 2016 a special steam trip from Gävle to Kiruna and back on the Inlandsbanan. On the southern trip, a special feature was exclusively built in, promoted as “we will also take out two steam locomotives which have been stored in sheds for the military reserve, for about fifty years. This is the first time this will be done in public”. The mentioned military shed is in Litsnäset along the tracks of Inlandsbanan, just north of Östersund. But the history of those E2 looks different ... This locomotive recovery went through successfully between June 16th and 17th. Beside of the involved employees and volunteers of the three museums organizations, the travel group as well as local people enjoyed the work. The SJ E2 948 and E2 954 were pulled out without any problem from the shed. While from the 948 the connecting rods were disassembled for the travel to Gävle Järnvägsmuseum, where she will be displayed in a cold war military shed, covered and mothballed as her predecessors. The 954 was filled with water and wood and soon it was ready to put fire on. The steam boiler went well but unfortunately the bearings of the connecting rods made some troubles. Instead of pulling a short goods train to Östersund as planned, the connecting rods had to be put apart and the engine had to be pulled as well. After some work in Gävle she will go to Oxelösund with the FSVJ Föreningen Sörmlands Veteranjärnväg. The strategic locomotive park was released by the Swedish Army in the eighties, as they realised, that the knowledge to operate steam engines no longer exists within the reserve units. Nevertheless, everybody who attended had a great time and it was much fun to see how the veterans came alive again. The freelancers from the railway museums, railway preservation societies and Infranord made a great job !

Description:  The T42 was built in 1953 in London/Ontario, with a 567B engine. Builder's number was A558. After run-down trials on CN, it was rebuilt with an early 567C engine, repainted "ELECTRO MOTIVE" on both sides, American coupler removed, and sent to Europe. It was handed over to NOHAB, Nydqvist & Holm, Trollhattan Sweden, where it was equipped with European side buffers and screw couplings. This locomotive was sold to Swedish State Railways as no. 205 and preserved. (emdexport.railfan.net)
