Album Info:Here are seven original photos that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 02 May 1965. The intent is to suggest what it was like, railroad wise, on a typical Sunday afternoon in Altoona during May of 1965. These color slides are presented in the order that I took them.

Description:  Sunday. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 02 May 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #6307 and #6304. Both are AF-27's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower each. They have just passed under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to East Altoona after making a helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Also visible on the right is a partial view of SLOPE Tower.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #6309, #5861, #5860-B, and #5838. #6309 is an AF-27 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1965 and rated at 2,750 horsepower; it is the "helper" engine in this context. #5861 and #5860-B are EP-20's built by EMD in 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5838 is an EP-22 built by EMD in 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. They are pulling a 13-car passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Pittsburgh and points West. This photo taken from the steps of SLOPE Tower.

Description:  Sunday. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 02 May 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5764, #5704, and #5894. All are EP-22's built by EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #5764 and #5704 were built in 1952, but #5894 was built in 1951. They are passing ALTO Tower with an 18-car eastbound passenger train and will soon stop at the Altoona Passenger Station.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #2229, #2501, and #2529. #2229 is an EF-22 built by EMD in 1963 and rated at 2,200 horsepower. #2501 and #2529 are GF-25's built by General Electric and rated at 2,500 horsepower each; #2501 was built in 1962, but #2529 was built in 1964. They are pulling a 45-car westbund manifest freight train through the Altoona Passenger Station on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. The caboose is N-8 #478159. This photo taken from the 12th Street Bridge.

They are pulling a 26-car westbound iron-ore train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Visible in the near distance is position-light signal #2360. This photo taken just East of the Altoona Passenger Station.

Description:  Sunday. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 02 May 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #7026, #9660, and #9819. All were built by EMD. #7026 is an EFS-17M built in 1955 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. #9660 and #9819 are EF-15A's rated at 1,500 horsepower each; #9660 was built in 1950, but #9819 was built in 1951. They are pulling a 128-car westbound mixed-cargo freight train with N-8 caboose #478039, plus pusher engines #8613 and #8614. This train is "sandwiched" in-between two moving trains: an eastbound coal train on the right, and a 129-car westbound mixed-cargo freight train on the left. The 4th Street Bridge is also visible in the background.
